Job duties include working closely with HumanCentric and client teams by:
Providing expertise and support to development teams during creation of user interfaces.
Rapidly, iteratively, and flexibly creating:
o Flow charts of task flows or information architecture
o Design schematics
o Wireframes of designs
o Paper and Interactive prototypes
o User Interface Specifications
o Usability test protocols and moderation
Driving usability evaluation efforts, when applicable, with the goal of analyzing and translating usability evaluation outcomes into design improvements.
Understanding product requirements and user’s goals and objectives.
Conceptualizing and creating user interface specifications that meet the product requirements of both clients and the clients’ customers. Products must meet user, technical, and creative expectations.

Summer 2009 Software Development Intern:

Rho Software Development has established an unpaid internship for Summer 2009 for a college student whose program area of specialty focuses on user interfaces and usability designs of software applications.  We want to add usability design to the front end of our software development lifecycle at the point we gather requirements and develop the functional specifications for our software applications.  We are interested in leveraging a college student who had been studying these techniques in their degree program.  We would like for the research and techniques that are trialed during this internship to be well documented included training materials so we can utilize the processes/tools demonstrated once the internship is complete.  It is important at the end of the internship that the student can describe how their work has impacted designs, requirements documentation, and programmer behaviors.

Background skills preferred:

  • Psychology training
  • Experience with web design and page layout
  • Familiar with the terms “human factors”  and “heuristics”
  • Experience setting up and/or running usability studies
  • Currently enrolled in a relevant Bachelor’s degree program (Usability design, etc)

Job: UI/IxD Engineer

As UI/IxD Engineer, your chief responsibilities will be to:

Design and build foundational UI technology for our award-winning current product and planned product line.
Work on a daily basis with our highly skilled team of Product Managers and Engineers, providing input, guidance, and direction on user interface designs, concepts and ideas.
Strive for simple, coherent designs at the code and interface level. Our product reflects complex relationships between processes on multiple systems and the successful designer will be able to make those relationships obvious, while bearing in mind scalability and navigational concerns
Wear a variety of hats and contribute in multiple areas in our small start-up environment. Will work on both UI design and interaction as well as engineering and implementation.
Work with Product Management team to build initial UI mock ups very early in the software lifecycle which will be transitioned to engineering to deliver final UI designs
Work heavily with both marketing and engineering to determine not only the what of a design but the how and why. Provide regular rapid responses to implementation questions, making many decisions yourself and escalating others as necessary

Depending on your background and interests, you might work on product definition plans, assist with partnering activities, help ramp up our technical field force, or write some technical documentation.

Requirements:

You must have experience building complicated, dynamic user interfaces.
Will be a champion of the user’s requirements, typical daily work flow, and will understand navigation of the UI.
You must NOT have a desire to work online in web/online interfaces. Our interfaces are built in Java and Swing and you should be comfortable with these technologies.
Strong leadership skills to guide junior engineers.
Must have experience shipping software as a product.
Bonus points for any systems management background.
You’ll also need to have completed a BS in Computer Science or related discipline or have significant work experience in IxD and UI implementation.

Occupational Summary

You will be responsible for developing user-centered workflows, information architectures, user interfaces, and information designs, balancing usability and cultural factors with strategic goals and objectives.   2. Research. Participate in user-centered design processes, especially conducting user research, competitive research, and usability testing.
  3. Specifiction. Write specifications that define the user experience architecture (sitemaps, workflows), wireframes, and use cases of new Web sites and applications.
  4. Collaboration. Collaborate with a diverse, user-centered design team made of Information Architects, Web Designers, Application Developers, and Account Managers for full life cycle web design and development.
  5. Client presentations & training. Facilitate transfer of information to clients, including writing documentation and effectively communicating complex, abstract ideas to Web laymen.
  6. Lead. Assess new methodologies, standards, technologies and trends, and formulate strategies and plans for the future of your discipline.

Qualifications

Education

BA or BS degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Experience

  • Minimum four or more years of experience in Web design and development.
  • Strong portfolio required, including wireframes, page layout, and information architecture.
  • Experience with large, complex, and dynamic Web sites.
  • Agency experience preferred.
