Cory Doctorow is a science fiction novelist, blogger and technology activist. He is the co-editor of the popular weblog Boing Boing, and a contributor to Wired, Popular Science, Make, the New York Times, and many other newspapers, magazines and websites. He was formerly Director of European Affairs for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org), a non-profit civil liberties group that defends freedom in technology law, policy, standards and treaties. In that capacity, he worked to balance international treaties, polices and standards on copyright and related rights, advocating in the halls of governments, the United Nations, standards bodies, corporations, universities and non-profit. Presently, he serves as the Fulbright Chair at the Annenberg Center for Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California. His novels are published by Tor Books and simultaneously released on the Internet under Creative Commons licenses that encourage their re-use and sharing, a move that increases his sales by enlisting his readers to help promote his work. He has won the Locus and Sunburst Awards, and been nominated for the Hugo, Nebula and British Science Fiction Awards. He co-founded the open source peer-to-peer software company OpenCola, sold to OpenText, Inc in 2003, and presently serves on the boards and advisory boards of the Participatory Culture Foundation, the MetaBrainz Foundation, Technorati, Inc, Stikkit, Annenberg Center for the Study of Online Communities, SiteShuffle, and Onion Networks, Inc. His latest novel is Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town.

Henry Petroski is the Aleksandar S. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering and a professor of History at Duke University. He has written broadly on the topics of design, success and failure, and the history of engineering and technology. His books include:

“To Engineer Is Human”, “Design Paradigms”, and “Engineers of Dreams”, all of which deal with large structures like bridges. He has also written about small, common things in his books, “The Pencil”, “The Evolution of Useful Things”, “The Book on the Bookshelf”, and
“Small Things Considered”. His next book will be a technical and cultural history of the toothpick.

NCSU Seeks Media Specialist

NC State University, Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications Unit (DELTA) http://delta.ncsu.edu/ is seeking a Media Specialist who will be responsible for graphic design, visual communication and the production of print media, web design and interactive marketing collateral. The Media Specialist will collaborate with various units within DELTA to provide vision, leadership and define strategies for DELTA’s Marketing and Partnership Development initiatives. They will work with a team of instructional designers, multimedia specialists, web application and web content developers as well as other university personnel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Media Specialist will collaborate with various units within DELTA to provide vision, leadership and define strategies for DELTA’s Marketing and Partnership Development initiatives. The Media Specialist will also be responsible for the design and production of a broad range of marketing and communications materials. They will work with instructional designers, multimedia specialists, web application and web content developers as well as other university personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. • Design and develop various media for print, web, interactive and video-based marketing collateral.

  2. • Assist and/or manage contracted media services, including copywriting, illustration, graphics, printing, video, animation, and web design.

  3. • Develop and manage design specifications for print materials, advertising placement, web applications, graphics and interactive Flash media.

  4. • Provide web design and development services for DELTA organizational websites, including interface design, site management, content editing, design consulting, application development and maintenance.

  5. • Serve as a liaison with network administrators and application developers to implement dynamic web based applications.

  6. • Manage and/or assist in preparing budgets and cost estimates for media-development projects and programs.

  7. • Ensure adherence to copyright laws and established university policies and procedures.

  8. • Maintain, coordinate and further develop public relations for DELTA Marketing & Partnership Development Office.

  9. • Develop and distribute press releases, fact sheets and media advisories for DELTA.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. • Manage and/or assist in the production of instructional technology products and materials.

  2. • Keep abreast of emerging multimedia technologies and find creative solutions to instructional problems.

Required Qualifications:

  1. • Bachelor’s degree in Design, Communications, Media Arts, Educational Technology or related field.

  2. • 3 years professional experience producing graphics, media and related web-based products.

  3. • Experience in project management including managing time, working within a budget, establishing priorities and meeting milestones and deliverables.

  4. • Demonstrated proficiency in print design, graphic design, multimedia authoring, digital imaging, photography, Internet programming languages (HTML, CSS, Action Script), and interface design.

  5. • Experience with streaming media, digital video production and animation.

  6. • Excellent interpersonal, written, and general communications skills

  7. • Ability to work in a team and establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.

  8. • Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations in multimedia design.

  9. • Experience in managing print production, preparing files for print, performing press checks, and a general knowledge of current printing technologies and services.

  1. Proficiency in the following applications:

    1. o Print Publishing Software (Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker, or similar)

    2. o Macromedia/Adobe Flash 8

    3. o Illustration Software (Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, or similar)

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. • 4-5 years experience in marketing, advertising, media communications or related field.

  2. • Demonstrated ability to work in a team production environment and multidisciplinary design process.

  3. • Expertise in Flash and ActionScript.

  4. • Knowledge of database design, PHP and XML as applied to rich-media application development.

  5. • Proficiency in the following applications:

    1. o Adobe/Macromedia Studio 8

    2. o Adobe Production Suite

    3. o Digital video production (Adobe Premiere Pro, AVID Xpress Pro, FinalCut Pro or similar)

    4. o DVD authoring

    5. o 3D design and animation

Job: Specification Writer

The Specification Writer is responsible for the UI specifications for the applications developed in the department.   The Specification Writer is involved from the concept phase, through the design and implementation, to testing and market launch.  The position is with the Application Software Development organization in RTP (Research Triangle Park), North Carolina, USA.   The role is part of the UI (User Interface) Design team, which is part of the global organization responsible for designing the user experience of the Sony Ericsson GSM and UMTS phones
   

The position includes the responsibilities of:

  • Documenting UI design in specifications (primarily AMMIs – a detailed spec of the UI)
  • Maintaining the UI specifications
  • Addressing reported design and software issues independently, analyzing, propose solutions, and document the resolved design
  • Gathering and analyzing requirements on UI specifications from stakeholders
  • Holding reviews of specifications

Minimum Education: BSEE, BSCE, or BSCS

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Training in technical writing, information design, communication, or equivalent.
  • At least 2 year relevant experience of technical writing, information design, communication, or equivalent
  • Problem setting and solving skills
  • Detail oriented

Also desirable experience or education in any of the following areas:

  • Foreign languages
  • International experiences
  • Interaction design, human computer interaction, usability, multimedia, software design, etc

His most recent book is Success through Failure: The Paradox of Design.
